If you prefer to put your photos onto paper, the program has a wide variety of different templates to maximise the number of images you can squeeze onto each sheet. While these are very useful, it would be even better to be able to specify the combination of shots and sizes you want and get the software to calculate the optimum layout. The top-level view is browse mode, where you see the file structure of your computer down the left-hand pane and thumbnails of the images in any open album on the right. A menu bar across the top offers album-level functions. To fill a new album you can download images directly from a camera or import them from any folder on your PC, simply by opening it. If you're an avid digital photographer or even if you only occasionally fill a memory card with images, you'll find Paint Shop Photo Album 4 an essential tool. It handles just about anything you could want to do with your shots as an interested enthusiast. From collecting them together into albums to making video CDs, from stitching together shots into panoramas to arranging prints to make the best use of expensive photo paper, the program is a master of simplicity. Once you've assembled an album, you can prepare a Video CD, complete with menus and background music and burn it using any CD recorder for viewing on other PCs or standalone CD players. Paint Shop Photo Album 4 is a remarkably useful piece of software for organising, touching up and displaying your digital photographs. --Simon Williams One Click Removal gives you a crosshair cursor that you can zero in on the irises of anyone in your picture showing the dreaded red-eye. It works reasonably well, but there's a red-eye brush too, if you want to take a more hands-on approach. Double-clicking on an image moves you to album mode, where you see thumbnails down the left and an enlarged single image on the right. Here you can apply standard transformations, such as rotation, cropping or brightness and contrast corrections. Read more Paint Shop Photo Album 4

Overall, Photo Standard 9.0 2004 is an ideal package for someone new to digital photography that wants to do more than just print out their snaps onto glossy paper. The included video tutorials and common tasks menu makes those first tentative steps into digital imaging manipulation seem like a walk in the park. The lack of additional filters may be a turn off for those wanting more than the basic 10, but this is just a small mark on an otherwise blemish-free package. --Martin Snelling All the regular photo correction tools are present including red-eye removal, lighting adjustments and rotate. A really cool feature that is hidden away on a drop-down menu is the ability to crop an image to different pre-set proportions including widescreen, wallet, TV, PDA and even smart phone--ideal if you want to use an image as wallpaper on your compatible mobile phone. If you have batches of images that all require the same fix, the Mini Lab will make it easy to correct them all--simply select the images that need correcting, select the correction tool and let Mini Lab do the rest. If you need help getting started, the video tutorials will guide you through the work area and basics of the photo touchup. Aimed at the novice digital photographer, Microsoft's Photo Standard 9. Photo Explosion Deluxe is recommended to anyone who wants to express themselves artistically through their digital photos. A fast Pentium 3 processor or above is suggested for advanced editing. --Gordon Goble, Amazon.com Far more than a digital image organizer and quickie touch-up tool, Photo Explosion Deluxe is a massive four-CD suite designed for the photographic artist and craftsperson. With this broad-ranging package, you can capture still images from your digital camera, DV camcorder or scanner, alter them to the very limits of your imagination, and display or print them in any way you see fit. Photo Explosion Deluxe offers a stunning array of editing tools. We started with simple contrast and focus adjustments and then curled the edge of our photo as if it was lifting slightly from its backing mat. We added a few translucent soap bubbles in the top left corner, threw a softened spotlight on the subject's face, and placed some clouds and streaky raindrops throughout. We then selected an antique frame, titled it with an ornate script, and even added our signature at the bottom right. Although every parameter of the editing process is fully adjustable, the program can also perform a variety of automatic modifications. After you've explored the central application, you'll want to investigate the extra three CDs for even more ideas and concepts. Here you'll find scores of artistic and fancy fonts, hundreds of miscellaneous stationery and greeting card templates, and oodles of professional-grade photos covering a wide range of subjects, from scenery and sunsets to scantily-clad models. The fourth CD houses bonus software only available in Photo Explosion's Deluxe version, including a utility for panorama stitching and two tools for configuring and exporting your photos to handheld computers. The final application, DVD PhotoPlay, allows you to build a slide show from selected images, burn it to a CD-RW, and play it on any CD or DVD player that supports Video CD 2.0.
